Vestas to build wind turbine blade fac-tory in Tianjin
Vestas Wind Systems A/S announced plans to establish a wind turbine blade factory in Tianjin Economic Technological Develop-ment Area, where it has signed a contract to buy about 190,000 square meters of land. The Danish wind power system provider will invest a total of US$30 million in the Tianjin facility and employ about 240 people. The plant is expected to deliver the first 39-meter blades for V80-2.0 megawatt wind turbines during the first half of 2006. At full capacity, the facility will be able to produce approximately 600 turbine blades per year.
Degussa and YSFC in new JV
Degussa signed an agreement with Yingkou Sanzheng Fine Chemicals (YSFC) to form a joint venture for manufacturing cyanuric chloride (CYC) and derivates in Yingkou, Liaoning province. The Germany-based specialty chemicals producer will hold a 65 percent stake in the joint venture, Degussa Sanzheng (Yingkou) Fine Chemicals, and YSFC will hold 35 percent. The new ven-ture, to operate primarily in the Asia region, is expected to generate sales of around 35 million euros with 650 employees. "The new joint venture sees us following in the footsteps of our customers, and in the process establishes the basis in China for further growth in our agrochemicals busi-ness," said Dr. Bernhard Hofmann, Head of Degussa's Fine & Industrial Chemicals Division. The group currently has eighteen companies and one R&D center operating in China.
AXA plans fund management JV
French insurer AXA is planning to set up a fund management joint venture with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, China Business Post reported. A proposal for the venture has already been submitted to government regulators, the report said. AXA already has an insurance joint venture with China Minmetals Group, AXA-Min-metals Assurance, in which AXA holds a controlling 51 percent stake.

Ericsson signs GSM agreement with Guangxi Mobile
Ericsson has signed a frame agreement with Guangxi Mobile Communications Company (Guangxi Mobile) for the Phase 10 GSM (Global System for Mobile com-munication) expansion in 2005. The total value of the agreement is estimated to be US$62 million. Under the agreement, Nanjing Ericsson Panda Communications Company, Ericsson's largest joint venture in China, will supply the relevant equip-ment. The expansion is scheduled for completion by September 2005.
ABB wins powertrain assembly contract
ABB announced that it has signed a contract worth more than US$13 million with SAIC GM Wuling Automobile (SGMW) to provide a powertrain assembly system for its new engine plant in Guangxi province. "Our ability to engineer, purchase materials and assemble systems in China provided us with a signi.cant competitive advantage in the market," said Bill Bradbury, global lead cen-ter manager of powertrain assembly at ABB Automation Technologies. SGMW's new engine plant will have an annual capacity of 300,000 engines when the first phase goes into service in 2007 and its production capac-ity is expected to exceed 500,000 per year upon the completion of the second phase. The powertrain assembly line provided by ABB consists of sub-assembly lines, which set the cylinder heads and pistons together, as well as cold and hot test workstations.
Alcatel wins routing contract with China Telecom unit
Alcatel announced that China Telecom subsidiary Hubei Telecom has selected the Alcatel Shanghai Bell IP service routing solution to expand and optimize its local operations. Alcatel's routing services will be implemented in Hubei's three major cities, Wuhan, Yichang and Huanggang. Services provided include advanced voice, high-speed Internet, IPTV, high speed In-ternet access for residential users as well as Layer 2 and 3 virtual private network (VPN) services for enterprises. The project will enable Hubei Telecom to deliver multiple services from a single network infrastructure, and with the Quality of Service (QoS) required to meet strict Service Level Agreements. The project will be completed in August 2005.

DHL opens quality control center in Beijing
DHL announced the opening of its first Country Quality Control Center (QCC) in Beijing in late July. The Country QCC will monitor all .ight information and shipment movement data as it happens and ensure a quicker and more ef.cient response to emergencies, providing more reliable security for the entire DHL air express operation network, said the company. "we have a growing but stable business in China, which needs such a center to cater for the increasing demands of passengers and to provide Chinese customers with secure, reliable and time-de.nite ship-ment movement," said Sean Patrick Wall, vice general manager of DHL-Sinotrans. Wu Dongming, Managing Director of DHL-Sinotrans, also announced DHL's plans to open two other QCCs in China this year: one will become operational in Guangdong province by October and the other will start services in Shanghai by the end of the year.

LANXESS's Technical Rubber Products Business Unit (BU TRP) opened a new multifunctional Technical Center in Shanghai in mid-July. Equipped with advanced working and testing facilities, the EUR5 million center will become the focal point for product application & development as well as intensive customer and LANXESS employee training for China and the whole Asia-Paci.c Region. It will also serve as the Regional Marketing Headquarters of the TRP Business Unit. The center will be staffed with experienced specialists from Germany and Canada to ensure high-quality expertise and services, said Dr. Gunther Weymans, Global Head of the BU TRP. "The establishment of a technical center within the world's fastest growing single market, China, was just one logical move in our quest to maintain and expand our leading position," said Dr. Weymans.

Rabobank to take stake in private Chinese bank
Netherlands-based Rabobank International and International Fi-nance Corp (IFC), the investment arm of the World Bank, plan to take a combined 24.9 percent stake in United Rural Cooperative Bank (URCB), a private bank in Zhejiang province, reported the China Business News, citing Zhang Ren, chairman of URCB. According to Zhang, Rabobank and IFC will become the first and second largest shareholders of URCB after the deal and Rabobank will appoint a vice president for URCB.
