BP plans second PTA plant in China
BP announced plans to build a second world-scale PTA (puri.ed terephthalic acid) plant at its BP Zhuhai Chemical Company Limited (BP Zhuhai) site in Guangdong Province. BP Zhuhai, an 85:15 joint venture between BP and China's Fu Hua, currently operates a 350,000 tonnes-a-year PTA plant at the site and will also build and operate the new plant, which will have an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes. The new facility is expected to become fully operational at the end of 2007 to meet China's growing PTA demand. The plant will be the to use BP's latest genera-tion of PTA technology, which enables scale and cost ef.ciencies, reducing both capital cost and conversion costs. In addition, the new plant will also be environment-friendly, minimizing both greenhouse gas emissions and other waste streams.
Total, Sinochem to form gas station JV
French oil company Total signed an agree-ment with Sinochem to establish a joint venture to build gas stations and sell re.ned oil products in eastern China, Sinochem said in a statement on its website. Total will hold a 49 percent stake and Sinochem will take 51 percent in the US$100 million venture.

Veolia and CITIC take over water supplier
Veolia Environment, the world's largest water company, and state-backed conglom-erate CITIC Pacific will supply drinking water to the city of Changzhou, Jiangsu province, in a 30-year deal worth US$964 million, the Standard of Hong Kong re-ported. CITIC will pay more than US$47 million for a 49 percent stake in Changzhou Tap Water Group (CZTWG) and take over management of the operation together with Veolia, which will control 51 percent of the joint venture. CZTWG operates five water treatment plants with a daily capacity of 790,000 cubic meters and a 1,750-kilome-ter network in Changzhou.
Outokumpu wins copper plant order
Outokumpu Oyj announced that its technol-ogy unit has won a contract worth more than EUR50 million from China's Yanggu Xiang-guang Copper Company to build a greenfield copper production plant in Yanggu county, Shandong province. The copper production in Yanggu will be based on Outokumpu's technology, including Flash Smelting pro-cess, Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Convert-ing process, anode casting shop, tankhouse, and sulphuric acid plant, said the Finnish minerals and metals processing technologies provider. In the phase, the new plant will have an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes of copper cathodes, with plans to expand this up to 400,000 tonnes. "This deal further shows that Outokumpu Technology masters the whole process chain from smelting and off-gas treatment up to electro-re.ned high quality copper with seamless integra-tion of various technologies," said Tapani Järvinen, President & CEO of Outokumpu Technology.
Aker Kvaerner wins polyethylene project design contract
Norwegian engineering and construction services provider Aker Kvaerner announced that it has signed a contract with PetroChina International Company to supply engineering design equipment for a new full-density poly-ethylene (FDPE) plant at the Dushanzi com-plex in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Aker Kvaerner will provide basic engineering design as well as offshore equipment and materials from its offices in the Netherlands and China. The FDPE plant consists of two lines each with an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes. It will make use of Univation's UNI-POL (TM) polyethylene technology, one of the core technologies in the Aker Kvaerner process portfolio. The project is to be executed on a fast-track basis, and production is expected to begin in September 2008.

Ericsson opens representative office in southwest China
Swedish telecom giant Ericsson opened a representative office in Guiyang, in the southwestern province of Guizhou, China Daily reported. The company is hoping to tap the western China region, where mobile phone penetration remains low and has great growth potential, the newspaper said, citing Mats H Olsson, president of Ericsson Greater China. Graeme McCusker, general manager of Ericsson's Western China op-erations, told the newspaper that the firm would continue to expand in the region by aggressively increasing investment, outsourcing and research and development activities. Ericsson announced in mid-Sep-tember that it would invest US$1 billion in China over the next five years.

BASF to expand China JV
BASF, the world's largest chemical com-pany, is to expand ethylene capacity by 25 percent at its mainland joint venture with Sinopec in order to meet growing demand, Bloomberg reported. The company wants to double the percentage of global sales from the country to 10 percent by 2010, with much of its US$1.2 billion investment earmarked for Asia over the next four years expected to enter China. The US$2.9 billion BASF-Sinopec chemical plant and other processing units in Nanjing started operating in June and have the capacity to produce 1.7 million tons of high quality chemicals.
Bosch JV to up investment in Shanghai research center
German auto components maker Robert Bosch said its joint ven-ture in China, United Automotive Electronic System, would invest RMB1 billion over the next three years to expand its technology center in Shanghai, Shanghai Daily reported. The investment will be used to create a 500-member research and development team and introduce advanced technology such as direct gasoline injectors by 2008, the report said, citing company sources. United Automo-tive Electronic System is a 50:50 joint venture between Bosch and Zhonglian Automotive Electronics established in 1995 with a total investment of RMB2.66 billion.
BNP Paribas eyes stake in Nanjing City Commercial Bank
France-based banking and financial group BNP Paribas plans to acquire a 20 percent stake in Nanjing City Commercial Bank for up to US$100 million, Oriental Morning Post reported. The newspaper, citing a source close to the situation, said that the two banks have "Basically agreed the deal",and BNP Paribas will have a seat on the Chinese lender's board of directors. BNP Paribas will buy 10 percent of the stake from International Finance Corp (IFC), the private sector .nancing arm of the World Bank, the newspaper said. IFC currently owns a 15 percent stake in Nanjing City Com-mercial Bank.
Standard Chartered invests in China stationery maker
Standard Chartered announced that its private equity arm, Standard Chartered Private Equity Ltd (SCPEL), has signed an agreement with Ningbo-based Beifa Group to invest US$16.6 million in the largest Chinese stationery maker. Standard Char-tered said in a statement that the investment would be used to raise Beifa's production capacity to meet the growing market demand and to expand business into stationery distribution by partnering with leading global office supply distributors. "SC-PEL is committed to facilitate the growth of Chinese enterprise. We are not only committed to contributing development capi-tal, but also actively involved in enhancing Beifa's corporate governance and internal control system," said Karam Butalia, global head of SCPEL.
