S&N plans three new breweries
Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) plans to invest US$53 million to build three new breweries in China, The Scotsman of UK reported. John Hunt, S&N.s direc-tor for Asia, said the Scottish brewer would open the three plants through its China joint venture, Chongqing Breweries, over the coming year. The planned breweries will have a combined production capacity of 264 million pints per year, doubling its production of beer in China. Hunt added that S&N would also consider acquiring state-owned brewers if the Chinese government put them up for sale. He said, "This is a signi.cant increase, which with investment in existing plants and judicious acquisi-tions means you are looking at a business that could multiply in size." With beer sold around the cities of Chongqing and Chengdu, and in the provinces near Shanghai, S&N.s joint venture is tapping a potential market of between 20 percent and 40 percent of China.s population, Hunt said.
