Teppanyaki restaurants are everywhere in Shanghai, with dozens of all-you-can-eat-and-drink dinner deals allowing diners to heap their plates high with the standard steak and sushi orders (though usually with substandard ingredients). But what about French-styled teppanyaki? We were intrigued. Moonsha's current French-Japanese set menu - on offer through June - is a good way to find out how these disparate parts come together.

Traditionalists won't be disappointed. The sashimi, tempura, pork chop and matsuzaka beef teppanyaki are all done superbly. The fun part is the French twists.

Our fourth course was a steamed egg with foie gras and salmon roe. The tops of the eggs had been cut off cleanly (our chef coyly declined to tell us how) and the foie gras dropped inside. Later, we sampled beef rolls - the thin strips wrapped around flying-fish roe and perilla leaves, adding a satisfying crunch to the creation. We finished off the menu with a cup of coffee and a trip to the dessert buffet.

Moonsha's simple, marble-and-satin d¨Ścor has an understated elegance, letting the fantastic view of the Huangpu River and Pudong do all the talking. A nine-course dinner se is RMB288-388 per person. Also, if you buy a regular-priced dinner set you'll receive a coupon for RMB100 off your next visit.
